Tips to Effective Management of Store Employees As a retail manager, your duties will be varied, all relating to the smooth running of a store. This will include managing staff and getting the best out of your employees and ensuring that they achieve the highest level of productivity each day. For this, there are some tips that you can take advantage of. Incorporating some or all of these useful tips will help you manage the teams effectively, get the most out of them and help them be the best they can be at all times.

Respect

The first tip you will want to learn is that you cannot expect respect without being respectful. In addition to this, respect isn't a right, you need to earn it. You want your teams to respect you and at the same time if you respect them for who they are and what they do, it will make it much easier. For any store to succeed, the retail manager needs to be respected. Work on this, be the leader that they need and expect. Lead by example and earn the respect of your employees to ensure your store grows from strength to strength moving forward.

Compliment in public

When an employee does a good job, don't just give them a high-five, rather give them the compliment they deserve in front of other employees and customers. Boost their confidence. When an employee goes the extra mile for a customer, ensure that they get the recognition that they deserve. Complimenting employees in public makes them feel important, makes them feel appreciated and makes them want to do better now and in the future.

Train in private

When it comes to training employees, whether you are training a new employee or you want to brush up on some skills and knowledge with existing employees, do that in private. Training should only be conducted in public when a new employee is going through induction and orientation and they have someone working with them to teach them all they need to know. Learning products and systems is something that should be conducted before or after work, out of the eye of the public.

Encourage employees to know their products

Employees need to know the products you have on your shelves and as a retail manager you will want to provide them with as much knowledge as possible, so they can always provide outstanding levels of customer service . An employee, no matter what their capacity in the company, should know where the products are in the store and something about each one. This way they will be able to answer all questions quickly and effectively, thereby boosting your levels of service on a daily basis. Think of when you visit a restaurant, you expect the waiting staff to answer questions about the menu. In the event the waiting staff must keep running to the kitchen to get answers, you are going to consider this to be poor service. The same applies when customers walk into your store, they expect top level service and your employees should receive ongoing and regular training on all the products you have listed to ensure that they provide the shopper with the service that they expect and deserve.

Pay above minimum wage

To secure good quality employees who are going to be loyal and hardworking, you are going to want to be pay them more than the national minimum wage. The minimum wage is set in place to ensure that you provide employees with a fair salary each week or month, depending on how you manage your payments. Paying slightly more than the national average, will encourage employees to work hard and provide you with a reliable service each day.

Hold employees accountable

As a retail manager, you are responsible when something goes wrong, as you are overseeing the daily operations, but at the same time it is also your employees' responsibility. You cannot charge employees for their mistakes, but you can take the time to explain to employees where they have gone wrong and how their mistakes have impacted the company moving forward.

Ask employees for their opinions

A good retail manager will understand that their employees are in the front line. The employees are the ones that deal directly with the customers so when it comes to introducing new products, changing the design of the shop or even marketing initiatives, getting the employees involved and asking them for their opinions can help you achieve success. When you have ideas about the store, put a brain storming group together, ask employees for their input and take that input on board. It's all very well asking them for their advice and recommendations, but take the time to listen to them and then use what they say to ensure that any changes or additions you make will benefit the business and your customers moving forward.

Reward employees

Rewarding employees for a job well done will always go a long way and encourage employees to work hard to achieve success and help them company achieve it's goals moving forward. When an employee does well, recognition and praise is always appreciated, but maybe once a month hold a staff meeting and reward employees. Rewards can be something as simple as a gift voucher for the store, so they can do some shopping at a discounted rate to treating them to a spa day. Remember employees will work harder if they have something to work towards, so consider introducing an employee rewards program into your store moving forward.
